Tips for Troubleshooting an Unresponsive Garage Door

Has the motor for your garage door suddenly stopped working or responding when you press the buttons? If so, you may find that it is impossible to open and close your garage door. While this can be frustrating, there are a few troubleshooting tips you can use to minimize your frustration.

Start with the Remote

The first step in figuring out what is wrong is to troubleshoot with the remote. For example, is the motor not responding to the remote, or is it not responding to anything? If it doesn’t respond to the remote, change the batteries or purchase a new remote. You should also check to make sure the remote has not to be deprogrammed. If it has, you will have to look at the owner’s manual for the door to figure out how to reprogram it.

Check to See if the Door is Locked

Some garage door openers have a locking function. If this is activated, it will keep the door from opening when you press the wall or remote opener. Check the wall opener to see if the “lock” button is there. Make sure it is not switched on. It may be necessary to read the owner’s manual to deactivate the lock if you see it has been activated.

Check the Power Source

If the issue is not with the remote, check the motor to make sure it is plugged in. Also, check the power outlet the motor is plugged into and the socket. If the power connection seems good, look at the fuse or circuit breaker.

Check the Sensors

The sensors are used to ensure the door does not close if someone or something is in its path. The first step to check them is to ensure there is nothing in the way. If there is no issue, be sure the sensors are aligned. If they are not properly aligned, the sensors will not “communicate” with each other, resulting in your garage door being unresponsive.

Call the Professionals for Help

Your garage door is big. It can also be quite dangerous. If it is not working properly and safely, it can pose a serious hazard to you, your family, pets, and even your vehicle. It is essential that you check and inspect your door regularly for problems or to see if it needs repairs.

If issues arise, such as an unresponsive door, and none of the troubleshooting tips above are effective, then it is time to call in the professionals. A professional garage door technician can help ensure your door is fixed and that no further issues arise.

While a technician is at your house, you can ask them to look for any other potential problems, too. The peace of mind these services provide is well worth the small investment you will have to make. Don’t wait if there are issues with your garage door – you must take action and call for professional help. Being informed is the best way to keep your door working properly.
